Protec's Nile Ranger praised by Joe Kinnear at Newcastle United
Former Protec student Nile Ranger, 17, has been praised by interim Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear who is following his progress closely. Kinnear said: "Ranger put in a great performance the other day for the reserves. He has been great in training as well - he is certainly one for the future and he is making rapid progress. If he keeps making rapid progress we could have a very good player on our hands." Kinnear is a known talent-spotter having nurtured Warren Barton, John Scales, Robbie Earle and Dean Holdsworth.
Ranger left Protec to joined Southampton's Academy in September 2007. He was released by Southampton's Academy in the summer and Newcastle signed him up in August 2008. Ranger has netted four goals in three matches for the reserve and youth team in just a week. He scored twice for the Academy in the 3 - 2 win over Leeds United before scoring a volley against Wigan last week.
Newcastle Utd coach Richard Money agreed: "Ranger's performance at Wigan was terrific. He was head and shoulders above everybody else on the pitch. He turns people and he looks dangerous but more importantly he works so hard for the team. He can progress to a good level - and maybe the highest level. Hopefully, that highest level will be with Newcastle."
Pete Edwards of Protec added: "Nile applied himself at Protec and we secured him a contract at Southampton. He now has a 2 year contract at Newcastle United and we're delighted that the skills he learned with us are still standing him in good stead. He is a striker who will entertain the Toon fans who enjoy watching great, attacking players."
